Sholay is one of the most popular films in the history of Indian cinema, and it is said to be one of India's most watched movie.The movie was written by Javed Akhtar, directed by Ramesh Sippy, and produced by Gulshan Rai. It starred Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini and Amjad Khan in lead roles. The songs were composed by Kalyanji Anandji with lyrics penned by Anand Bakshi. As the movie was made in 1970, it was considered to be a milestone in Indian cinema. It is seen by the Indian audience as a benchmark to judge the mass popularity of Bollywood films. Sholay was released in 1975 and Doordarshan started broadcasting in color in early 1976.The movie was later dubbed into Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam languages. It was also dubbed in Punjabi, but it wasn't released due to a lawsuit which happened between the producers of the original Sholay and Life OK channel over the broadcasting rights of the movie. The lawsuit claims that the Life OK channel has edited portions from original Sholay. However this film has been shown on Punjab based big channel "Desi Channel" from 23 March 2013 onwards under its new name "Sholay - The Revenge". The movie is very much a part of Indian history and culture, and it is still being watched in the same spirit. The movie was released in 21 countries in the world, including Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Iran. The word 'Sholay' was popularized in North America when an American comedy series called "Weekend at Bernie's" from 1992 to 1994 used the word as a brand name for stolen items.

A sequel titled Sholay - Revenge was produced in 2012 by producer Gulshan Rai. It was directed by Omung Kumar and starred Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn and Kajol.

In 2017, a remake of the film is to be made in Kannada, titled "Sholay Talli" that will be directed by Priyadarshi Mallineni and Nikhil Raj who will play the roles of Bachchan and Ashok Kumar. A Bengali remake titled 'Shlak' is currently in the making with Aarush Deshmukh playing the lead role of Amitabh Bachchan.
